Mecklenburg County congratulates Angela Lee, retired Assistant Health Director, on being awarded the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Lee retired in December 2023 after a 30-year career in public health that helped improve the health and well-being of communities across North Carolina. 

Mecklenburg County has completed a draft of a behavioral health strategic plan and invites residents to review and offer comments, especially people with lived experience, family members, and service providers. Behavioral health generally refers to mental health and substance use disorders, life stressors and crises, and stress-related physical symptoms. In recent years, Mecklenburg County has identified behavioral health as a priority for improving the well-being of residents. 

Two students have been named National Ambassadors of Mecklenburg County’s annual “Do the Write Thing” writing contest. Qui’arie Randall from Northeast Middle School and Justice Fields from Whitewater Middle School may represent their peers during the National Campaign to Stop Violence Recognition Week in Washington, D.C. this summer. An initiative of the National Campaign to Stop Violence, Do the Write Thing is a writing program for middle school students that engages students to think about how youth violence has affected their lives and to consider what they can do about it. 

The week of May 6, 2024 is a time to show your appreciation for teachers across our community and in all of our schools—the teachers who shape young minds, from toddlers to high school seniors. Mecklenburg County salutes its teachers in MECK Pre-K, the County’s innovative program to offer high-quality education for all 4-year-old children residing in Mecklenburg County at no cost to their families.

May is Small Business Month, and Mecklenburg County is uplifting the entrepreneurs and small businesses that make up the backbone of the local economy. 

Leaders and staff from Mecklenburg County government, including the Board of County Commissioners and County Manager’s office, offer their condolences and support to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), the U.S. Marshals Service,  and our entire law enforcement community following the shooting deaths and injuries of several officers.

As a spotlight on Mental Health Awareness Month, Public Health’s Resiliency in Communities After Stress and Trauma (ReCAST) II team will offer a wide array of educational opportunities throughout May to build mental well-being. 

Mecklenburg County’s social media team received three “Excellence in Communications Awards” from NC3C, or North Carolina City and County Communicators. NC3C includes communicators from cities, counties, universities, and other agencies across the state. The Excellence in Communications Awards recognize great local government communicators and foster achievement among members by showcasing top-level work.
