Would you like to experience the "Great Urban Escape?" McDowell Nature Preserve offers 1,116 acres of peace and quiet. Choose from a wide variety of outdoor recreation opportunities and visit the Nature Center - all while you camp onsite!  Additional park activities include 8 miles of hiking trails, picnic areas, shelter rentals, fishing (NC fishing license required), Geocaching, Nature Center, and more! 

McDowell Campground has 56 campsites ranging from full RV hookup to primitive sites. Additional amenities include a bathhouse, laundry facilities, and playground. Group camping is also available at Copperhead Island just a few miles up the road.

 

CAMPGROUND FEES & SITE DETAILS

Campsites may be reserved seven days a week. Must be made 48 hours in advance  ONLINE or by calling 980-314-2267(CAMP) Walk-in reservations are welcome, but not permitted after business hours. Set up is NOT permitted on a campsite without payment and proof of permit. Maximum of 6 people on each site. All vehicles MUST remain in their designated driveways. Additional vehicles must park in overflow parking located at the Office Building or in Primitive Parking Lots

ALL RESERVATIONS MUST BE PAID IN FULL AT THE TIME OF BOOKING: Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or Cash ONLY

RV CAMPING: 

 R sites are for pop-up campers or RV's ONLY! No Tent camping allowed on these sites. If you have a tent you must reserve D sites, P site, or T sites.  Failure to comply with this policy will result in cancellation of your permit and no refund will be issued.

 HOW TO LOCATE YOUR GATE CODE:

 The Campground gate opens at 10 AM and closes at 6 PM daily. To access the gate a 4 digit gate code will be given to access the grounds during your stay. If reserving online, an additional permit aside from the original email receipts will be sent to you with the Gate Code. Please allow 24-48 hours after booking. If you have not received your Gate Code, please check your junk mail folder and/or call 980-314-2267. You will need this code to enter the grounds after 6 p.m.

If the reservation is made over the phone or in person: 

Locate RESERVATION APPROVED email received from Campground Staff. Click the first link in email and scroll to the bottom of the permit. Gate Code will be located under the customer question section. Click that section to retrieve your code.

If the reservation is made online:

All reservations will receive a receipt and permit from eparks. There will be a 3rd follow up email that will be sent adding your gate code to your permit. Click the first link in email and scroll to the bottom of the permit. Gate Code will be located under the customer question section. Click that section to retrieve your code.

CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT PROCEDURE:

 Check-in is anytime after 3:00 PM and Check-out is anytime before 12:00 PM

**For early check-in or late check-out please call our office prior to reservation.

CHECK-IN:

  • ALL guests MUST check-in at the Campground Office prior to setting up on their site.
  • Guests are required to check-in before the end of the business day.
  • If your party cannot make it before the office closes, please call our office so we can make sure you have everything you need to check in. If you reach our voicemail during business hours, please leave a message and we will return your call by the end of the business day.
  • Locate your permit in your email to verify your reservation information. Please know your gate code and site number upon arrival.
  • If arriving after business hours, just drive directly to your site. A tag will be in your site box with your name.

CHECK-OUT:

  • ALL belongings and trash must be removed from the site including fire rings. Any additional trash that does not fit in your designated trash can must be taken with you or placed in the dumpsters
  • DO NOT REMOVE RESERVATION TAG FROM SITE
  • ANY ADDITIONAL DAYS MUST BE ADDED BEFORE CHECK-OUT TIME
  • Any belongings left onsite after checkout and no payment received will be removed from site until retrieved or payment is received.

CAMPGROUND REGULATIONS 

 **** FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH PARK RULES AND ORDINANCES WILL RESULT IN LOSS OF RESERVATION PRIVILEGES & NO REFUND WILL BE ISSUED. *****

  

  • All sites must be paid in advance. Failure to pay for the site in advance is considered trespassing and will be immediate removal from the grounds and permanent loss of reservation privileges for all party. 
  • All sites must always remain presentable and orderly. Please use receptacles and dumpsters to eliminate litter to the preserve.
  • Failure to abide by Park Rules can lead to temporary or permanent exclusion or prosecution.
  • All guests must check in the Information Office upon arrival before proceeding to their campsite to receive parking tags and site information.
  • Vehicle parking pass must be placed on the dashboard in all vehicles permitted. A maximum of 2 vehicle passes will be issued.
  • Check in at 3:00 pm and Check out at 12:00 pm.  Check-in times and site change must be approved by staff.
  • No more than 6 people may occupy the same site.
  • No generators allowed on sites
  • No swimming or wading allowed off park property.
  • No off-road vehicles allowed: (UTV/ATV or Dirt Bikes) No Bicycles allowed on trails.
  • ALL Pets must remain on a 6ft leash or less at ALL times and are not allowed in the Bath House Restrooms.
  • No storage of RV's, campers and boat trailers allowed.
  • Campers must be at least 18 years of age to register a campsite and must be present during the duration of stay.
  • Quiet Hours: 10:00 pm – 7:00 am Strictly Enforced.
  • No amplified music allowed. Please be respectful of other guests.
  • ALL Fireworks are prohibited.
  • ALL fires must be confined to designated grills or fire rings. Moving of fire rings is prohibited. Fires are not to be left unattended and must be completely extinguished prior to checkout. Moving of fire rings will result in permanent loss of reservation privileges.
  •  Treated firewood permitted ONLY! No glass, aluminum, metal, nor plastic allowed to be burned within the fire rings. Do not leave fires unattended. Please make sure all fires are extinguished at the end of the stay. McDowell Nature Preserve is protected land of Mecklenburg County. Please assist in the protection of our wildlife and natural habitats. Disturbing the natural habitat and pulling firewood from the Nature Preserve is not permitted and an ordinance violation. Failure to follow this ordinance could result in a loss of reservation privileges. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation reserves the right to ban campfires in unsafe conditions.
  • McDowell Nature Preserve and Campground is a tobacco-free park.  This includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, hookahs or any other form of tobacco that can be used for consumption.  
  • Consuming or displaying in public any beverage of alcoholic content, including beer, wine or a controlled substance is strictly prohibited.
  • Acting in a disorderly manner or creating any noise which would result in an annoyance to others is prohibited
  • Operating vehicles in a reckless manner, or in excess of the posted speed limits, or in areas other than those specifically intended for vehicular traffic is prohibited.
  • Dumping any refuse or waste, including grey water, from any trailer or other vehicles, except in places or receptacles provided for such use, is strictly prohibited. 
  • Nature Preserve is not accessible after sunset. Entering the Preserve after hours is unlawful and considered trespassing.

 EXTENDED STAY:

McDowell Campground campsites are rented on a daily rate. Please see site information for rental fee details.

PEAK SEASON:

During the months of April-November, a 14 DAY MAXIMUM PER MONTH (PER FAMILY/CAMPING PARTY) is implemented. McDowell Campground does not permit extended stay reservations during these months. The maximum stay permitted is 14 days per calendar month or 14 days per visit including ALL members of family or camping party. Please be advised if this policy is abused you will be asked to leave or escorted off the grounds immediately by campground staff, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and/or Park Rangers and will not be issued a refund. Abusing this policy is also an automatic loss of permanent reservation privileges.

OFF SEASON:           

During the months of December-March guests are permitted to stay continuous. All guest that are on extended stay must complete a separate information form and are to move campsites every 2 weeks for maintenance and availability. Please be advised if this policy is abused you will be asked to leave or escorted off the grounds immediately by campground staff, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police and/or Park Rangers and will not be issued a refund. Abusing this policy is also an automatic loss of permanent reservation privileges. 

REFUND POLICY:

  1. Refunds will be given (minus a 10% administrative fee) if cancellation notice is given at least thirty (30) days in advance for Facility, Field and Shelter rentals OR at least ten (10) days in advance for Campground rentals and Activities.
  2. There will be NO REFUND if less than thirty (30) days' notice is given for Facility, Field and Shelter rentals.
  3. There will be NO REFUND if less than ten (10) days' notice is given for Campground rentals and Activities.
  4. NO REFUNDS will be given in the event of inclement weather.
  5. In the case of inclement weather, Facility, Field, and Shelter reschedules may be given for another time or location (of equal or lesser value) but must be requested within seven (7) business days after the event.
  6. Campground reschedules must be made at least three (3) days prior to the rental camping date.
  7. Only one (1) Camping reschedule is allowed per reservation.
  8. All refunds must be submitted via the Refund Request Form provided by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation.
  9. Customers should be aware that refunds take twenty-one (21) days to process.

In the event of a State of Emergency or Natural Disaster for non-departmental activities, athletic field reservations, facility rentals, etc., the department or patron may initiate a request for a full refund. In lieu of a refund due to a State of Emergency or Natural Disaster, the department/patron reserves the right to issue a credit for a future reservation for the same type of facility at a later date, up to 11 months in the future.

FISHING:

  • All N.C. state regulations apply.
  • No bank fishing is permitted after the Preserve is closed.
