Mecklenburg County Manager Dena R. Diorio announced today that W. Lee Jones Jr. has been named as the new Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation director effective March 28, 2018. The announcement comes after a nationwide search following the retirement of Jim Garges, who served as director from 2007-2017. Jones, a licensed architect and member of the American Institute of Architects, currently serves as the division director for Park and Recreation’s Capital Planning and Alliance Development Services. He is responsible for coordinating the planning, design and construction of the department’s facilities and overseeing the development of many partnerships. Over the years, Jones worked on several notable park projects, including First Ward Park, Romare Bearden Park and the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex at Matthews. “Lee has played an instrumental role in the development of many of our parks and recreational facilities,” said Diorio. “I am excited to be able to announce him as the new Park and Recreation director. I am confident he will continue to help us expand our incredible list of recreational programs and amenities for everyone to enjoy.” Prior to joining Mecklenburg County in 2004, Jones worked for private architectural firms, and later served as facilities planner for Arlington County, Va. and deputy director for Prince George’s County, Md. Department of Environmental Resources. He holds a bachelor of arts degree in architectural studies from Wesleyan University and a master of architecture degree from the University of Virginia. Jones' starting salary will be $172,000.
