Please note: Criminal record checks are to be conducted on all applicants over the age of 16 before enrolling in our volunteer program. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult that is at least 21 years old. Volunteers working in the Therapeutic Recreation Division must be at least 18 years old.

12/20/2019MONTHLY DANCE for Teens & Adults

The Monthly Dance is the place to be on the 3rd Friday of each month! Teens to adults with disabilities dance the night away at these FUN themed events, offered by Therapeutic & Inclusive Recreation Services.

  • February 21, 2020 – EAT, DANCE & BE MINE!

 

Volunteers are needed to help with set-up/tear down, serving food and drinks, and helping with crafts, games or other activities.

12/28/2019"WEED WARRIORS" Invasive Plant Removal

Meet the staff at McDowell Nature Center to connect with people and nature, all while making a positive difference in the community by removing invasive plant species!

Dates: Saturdays

  • April 25, 2020 

​Volunteers will assist Natural Resources staff in tracking down and removing invasive plants, including Elaeagnus sp. – A.K.A. Silverberry!

  • Volunteers 12 years old and up are welcome!
  • Anyone under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by a parent/adult at all times.
  • Please wear long pants and long sleeves; closed-toe shoes are required!
  • Bring a refillable water bottle and snacks - water and restrooms will be available at the Nature Center.
  • Hand tools and work gloves will be provided.

*We need to know how many Volunteers to plan for (with tools and gloves), and we need to be able to contact you in case of changes or cancellations!*

1/8/2020TUTORING at Revolution

Students in grades K-12 receive weekly tutoring in reading and math, primarily facilitated by NC Educator licensed teachers.

Volunteers MUST be at least 18 years old, and submit an online application including a background check.

​Volunteers provide valuable 1-on-1 assistance to students in studying reading and math. A great opportunity to provide a positive example to youth and teens!

2/29/2020FAIRY HOUSE FESTIVAL 2020

Come and help with this HUGE annual family festival at Latta Plantation Nature Center! Activities will  include: a fairy house building contest, fairy-themed crafts and games, geocaching, storytelling and more!

3 SHIFT OPTIONS are available - Please specify when signing up:

- Morning: 9:00am-1:30pm - Afternoon: 1:00pm-5:00pm

- ALL DAY - 9:00am-5:00pm

Volunteers will assist with a variety of stations, including but not limited to: crafts, games, registration, assisting with shuttles, preparing free popcorn, tending fire pits, etc.

Please dress for the weather - the Festival is a rain-or-shine event! Volunteers are welcome to dress up in fairy themed clothing that is family-friendly. Lunch will be provided ONLY for Volunteers who work all day.

*Volunteers must be at least 12 years old - any Volunteer under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by a parent/adult at all times! Please also note that adult Volunteers must register and pay for children to attend the Festival.

3/1/2020Youth Baseball/Tee-ball Coaches

Program introduces the fundamentals of Baseball or Tee-ball, and provides youth with an opportunity for building sportsmanship while engaging in healthy competition.

Qualifications: 18 and over; great with kids, must have knowledge of the sport or willingness to learn. Background screening required.

Must be available to meet once or twice a week for practice and on Saturdays for games.

IMPORTANT: Registration for Spring sports ends on February 28 – YOU MUST HAVE YOUR APPLICATION AND BACKGROUND CHECK APPROVAL COMPLETED NO LATER THAN February 20!

Coach will provide leadership and guidance, physical training, and instruction in the fundamentals of baseball/tee-ball for team players.

Park & Recreation provides: Coach training and National Association of Youth Sports (NAYS) certification for head coaches; additional in-house training for ALL coaches and assistant coaches; coach shirts and any additional equipment needed.
