PARK INFORMATION:

Located just a few miles from McDowell Nature Preserve, Copperhead Island is a 14-acre park featuring a public boating access providing direct launching access to Lake Wylie. Copperhead Island also features a reservable area permitted for shelter rentals or group camping experiences. In addition to boating, there are select fishing piers and trails located within the park and the island area. Fishing is strictly prohibited off the boat dock or landings.

BOATING AREA INFORMATION:

  • No fishing from boat dock or boat landings

  • Fishing is not permitted after the Preserve is closed.

PARKING:

Please respect the park and other visitors and park in designated parking areas. No parking is allowed in boat launch areas, grass, roadways, or undesignated parking areas. All single cars must park in the upper lot by entrance designated for single/untrailered vehicles. All vehicles and trailers must park between the designated lines and should not take up more than one parking space. If boating parties have more than one vehicle in their party, they are permitted to use a trailer space, but must park all vehicles bumper to bumper in spot.

  • NO fishing or parking from boating areas which include boat docks and landings.
  • NO public access to reservation area when area is rented.
  • NO entry or fishing after closure of the preserve unless properly permitted by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation
  •  No swimming or wading allowed off park property.
  • No off-road vehicles allowed: (UTV/ATV or Dirt Bikes) No Bicycles allowed on trails.
  • ALL Pets must remain on a 6ft leash or less at ALL times and are not allowed in the Bath House Restrooms.
  • No storage of RV's, campers and boat trailers allowed.
  • No amplified music allowed. Please be respectful of other guests.
  • ALL Fireworks are prohibited.
  • McDowell Nature Preserve and Campground is a tobacco-free park.  This includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, hookahs or any other form of tobacco that can be used for consumption.  
  • Consuming or displaying in public any beverage of alcoholic content, including beer, wine or a controlled substance is strictly prohibited.
  • Acting in a disorderly manner or creating any noise which would result in an annoyance to others is prohibited
  • Operating vehicles in a reckless manner, or in excess of the posted speed limits, or in areas other than those specifically intended for vehicular traffic is prohibited.
  • Dumping any refuse or waste, including grey water, from any trailer or other vehicles, except in places or receptacles provided for such use, is strictly prohibited. 
  • Nature Preserve is not accessible after sunset. Entering the Preserve after hours is unlawful and considered trespassing.

RESERVATION INFORMATION:

ALL island reservations are required and must be made at least 7 days before the date of rental. To make a reservation, call McDowell Campground at (980) 314-2267. Note that any alcohol/bounce house permits are for shelter use only and must be made with the Central Office. No amplified music is allowed at any time.  ie; NO bands, DJ's, amplified musical instruments or microphones. Reservations made over the phone must be paid in full with a MasterCard or Visa. Rental time is 8am-8pm.

AMENITIES:

Lights, water, electricity, restrooms, charcoal grills, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pit, and 10 picnic tables (each table seats 8 people)

SHELTER PERMITS/REMINDERS: 

  •  Please be advised no alcohol or amusement bounce houses are allowed on the premises unless permit is obtained from the main office at 5841 Brookshire Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28216. Phone number is 980-314-1000. Once permit is obtained, all alcohol MUST remain under the shelter area. You may not walk through the park with alcohol nor drink on campsites.
  • No amplified music allowed (nothing louder than a small radio)
  • 80-person MAX capacity
  • No wood collection allowed in the preserve/island for campfire use. McDowell Nature Preserve & Copperhead Island are protected lands, so we preserve the natural habitat areas for our living inhabitants. All firewood must be treated wood and can be purchased from McDowell Campground or any surrounding area stores.
  • NO FIREWORKS, EXPLOSIVES, FIREARMS, CONFETTI, WATERBALLOONS, GLITTER OR SIDEWALK CHALK ALLOWED.
  • ONLY 2 vehicles allowed on island- no vehicles allowed beyond the shelter parking lot area.
  • All dogs MUST remain on leash at ALL times and please pick up after your pets.
  • No swimming
  • All adults fishing must have valid NC fishing license for adults over the age of 16. Patrons 16 years of age and younger can fish under an adult.
  • All campfires MUST be in designated fire rings and extinguished properly after use. (Please do not leave burning or smoldering)
  • Please dispose ALL trash in receptacles provided.
  • Please check your permit for additional information.

CHECK-IN:

  • The access road to the reservation area is locked and should remain as pictured during stay. Renters will used GOL ROLL LOCK to access the grounds.
  • ALL guests will receive a 4-digit gate code upon reservation. Please reference permit regarding code.
  • All guests MUST check-in with the McDowell Campground Office prior to setting up on their site via phone, email or in person so we can make sure you have everything you need to check in.
  • Locate your permit in your email to verify your reservation information. Please know your gate code and site number upon arrival.
  • If arriving after business hours, just drive directly to your site. A tag will be on the island entrance and shelter area with your name.
  • ANY ADDITIONAL DAYS MUST BE ADDED at least 72 hours BEFORE CHECK-IN TIME (subject to availability)

  • ALL belongings and trash must be removed from the site including fire rings.
  • Any additional trash that does not fit in your designated trash can must be taken with you. No trash is to be left out overnight for our wildlife to disturb.
  • DO NOT REMOVE RESERVATION TAG FROM SITE
  • Any belongings left onsite after checkout and no payment received will be removed from site until retrieved or payment is received.

 

RESERVABLE FACILITY RULES AND REGULATIONS:

  • All sites must be paid in advance. Failure to pay for the site in advance is considered trespassing and will be immediate removal from the grounds and permanent loss of reservation privileges for all party. 
  • All sites must always remain presentable and orderly. Please use receptacles and dumpsters to eliminate litter to the preserve.
  • Failure to abide by Park Rules can lead to temporary or permanent exclusion or prosecution.
  • All guests must check in the Information Office upon arrival before proceeding to their campsite to receive parking tags and site information.
  • Vehicle parking pass must be placed on the dashboard in all vehicles permitted. A maximum of 2 vehicle passes will be issued.
  • Check in at 3:00 pm and Check out at 12:00 pm.  Check-in times and site change must be approved by staff.
  • No more than 6 people may occupy the same site.
  • No generators allowed on sites
  • No swimming or wading allowed off park property.
  • No off-road vehicles allowed: (UTV/ATV or Dirt Bikes) No Bicycles allowed on trails.
  • ALL Pets must remain on a 6ft leash or less at ALL times and are not allowed in the Bath House Restrooms.

  • Campers must be at least 18 years of age to register a campsite and must be present during the duration of stay.
  • Quiet Hours: 10:00 pm – 7:00 am Strictly Enforced.
  • No amplified music allowed. Please be respectful of other guests.
  • ALL Fireworks are prohibited.
  • ALL fires must be confined to designated grills or fire rings. Moving of fire rings is prohibited. Fires are not to be left unattended and must be completely extinguished prior to checkout. Moving of fire rings will result in permanent loss of reservation privileges.
  •  Treated firewood permitted ONLY! No glass, aluminum, metal, nor plastic allowed to be burned within the fire rings. Do not leave fires unattended. Please make sure all fires are extinguished at the end of the stay. McDowell Nature Preserve is protected land of Mecklenburg County. Please assist in the protection of our wildlife and natural habitats. Disturbing the natural habitat and pulling firewood from the Nature Preserve is not permitted and an ordinance violation. Failure to follow this ordinance could result in a loss of reservation privileges. Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation reserves the right to ban campfires in unsafe conditions.
  • McDowell Nature Preserve and Campground is a tobacco-free park.  This includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco, hookahs or any other form of tobacco that can be used for consumption.

REFUND POLICY:

  1. Refunds will be given (minus a 10% administrative fee) if cancellation notice is given at least thirty (30) days in advance for Facility, Field and Shelter rentals OR at least ten (10) days in advance for Campground rentals and Activities.
  2. There will be NO REFUND if less than thirty (30) days' notice is given for Facility, Field and Shelter rentals.
  3. There will be NO REFUND if less than ten (10) days' notice is given for Campground rentals and Activities.
  4. NO REFUNDS will be given in the event of inclement weather.
  5. In the case of inclement weather, Facility, Field, and Shelter reschedules may be given for another time or location (of equal or lesser value) but must be requested within seven (7) business days after the event.
  6. Campground reschedules must be made at least three (3) days prior to the rental camping date.
  7. Only one (1) Camping reschedule is allowed per reservation.
  8. All refunds must be submitted via the Refund Request Form provided by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation.
  9. Customers should be aware that refunds take twenty-one (21) days to process.

In the event of a State of Emergency or Natural Disaster for non-departmental activities, athletic field reservations, facility rentals, etc., the department or patron may initiate a request for a full refund. In lieu of a refund due to a State of Emergency or Natural Disaster, the department/patron reserves the right to issue a credit for a future reservation for the same type of facility at a later date, up to 11 months in the future.
