- Urban Section: Connects North Sycamore, State Street and Freedom Drive
Urban Section of Irwin Creek Greenway
NOTE: The imminent Charlotte Gateway Station project will be replacing the lower of the two bridges over the Wesley Heights greenway connector between Cedar St. and Graham St., temporarily altering the trail from April 2019 to July 2019. Public access is set for the first week of August. For more information, please go to: Projects Impacting Existing Greenways.
Urban Irwin and Stewart Creek Greenways are joined by the Wesley Heights Connector. The urban part of the system connects Wesley Heights neighborhood and Third Ward. Nearby amenities include Uptown Charlotte, Bank of America Stadium, Wallace Pruitt Recreation Center, Ray's Splash Planet, Irwin Avenue Elementary School, Johnson & Wales University, Frazier Park, James Dennis Rash Third Ward Neighborhood Park, Historic Elmwood Cemetery, Our Children's Memorial Walkway and Martin Luther King Park.
Eventually these greenways will be connected as a contiguous greenway that extends from Sunset Road (Stewart Creek) and Nevin Regional Park at Old Statesville Road (Irwin Creek) south to Billy Graham Parkway. Irwin Creek then becomes Sugar Creek and continues as a greenway system beyond the South Carolina state line.
Wildlife is spotted frequently along the creek including Mallard Duck and Great Blue Heron. The trail is only a few minutes' walk from Johnson & Wales University, Gateway Village and uptown condos and offers a quiet place to relax during the busy day.
