School Gardens

Green Teacher Network

Green Teacher Network (GTN) works to advance academics, health and sustainabilityGTN logo.jpg through school gardens and outdoor learning. Studies have shown that youth involved in gardening consume more fruits and vegetables than youth who have not experienced a garden. School gardens can also nurture young leaders by helping students to develop proficiency in critical thinking, problem solving, responsibility, and communication. They currently maintain a network of over 2,000 educators in 185 schools in the Charlotte region. GTN works with over 30 organizations that collectively support school gardening and outdoor learning. The collective effectiveness of their team has shown engagement with over 185 area schools in the past 2 years.  In response to teachers surveys GTN published a Schoolyard Gardening and Tasting Guide as a step by step guide for school gardens and tastings. Also, UNC Charlotte Center for STEM Education is working on a Curriculum Connection Matrix to provide a centralized site to access school garden, tasting and outdoor learning lesson plans connected to North Carolina Essential Standards.

Field to Fork

The Field to Fork Program is a partnership with the MCFVC, CMS, Fuel Pizza and Land Sculptors, LLC that promotes child wellness by growing a healthy pizza garden with elementary age children. Since 2010, the program has helped young people understand the role of healthy eating from fresh foods while teaching them patience and responsibility through gardening.

Objectives for participants of Field to Fork are that they will be able to:
  • identify the 3 key components of gardening
  • identify how a vegetable pizza meets the My Plate method for building a healthy meal
  • identify the key ingredients in all-natural pizza dough
  • create a healthy pizza with vegetables from their school garden

A goal of Field to Fork is for participating teachers to become ambassadors of the program, sharing and promoting the gardening experience in their school and community throughout the years to come.
