Mecklenburg County is the center of the country's fifth largest urban area with over seven million people living within a 100-mile radius. The county consists of a large urban center surrounded by smaller, more rural communities. Charlotte, with an estimated 2018 population of 841,611 is the largest city in the state and occupies 303 of the county's 527 square miles. Other municipalities include Cornelius, Davidson, Huntersville, Pineville, Matthews and Mint Hill.
