A Holiday to Honor Our Heroes
Wednesday, Nov. 11 is Veterans Day and this year, it will be observed as a new County holiday. Throughout the day consider giving some of your time, energy or resources to at least one of our nation's veterans. It would be a small token of appreciation to those who were willing to make the ultimate sacrifice.
To honor our County employees who are veterans, we will unveil a page on www.mecklenburgcountync.gov this week to share their stories.
Thank you to all of our veterans. Health Department’s Colorectal Screening Pilot Project
Colorectal cancer is the second leading cancer killer in the United States among men and women. Screening can help find cancer at an early stage, when treatment often leads to a cure.
To address colorectal cancer in Mecklenburg County, the Health Department has launched a pilot screening project for women who are served by the Breast and Cervical Cancer Control Program (BCCCP).
Women who meet screening guidelines will be offered free, take-home Fecal Immunochemical Tests (FIT). Once the test is completed, it will be processed in the health department’s laboratory. Through a partnership with Carolinas HealthCare System, any woman that tests positive will receive colonoscopies. Any patient diagnosed with colorectal cancer will be referred to the Levine Cancer Institute for appropriate care.
This screening procedure is a recommended “best practice” by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and will allow the Health Department to evaluate the program and enhance quality prior to expansion into the community.
