Legislative Update
The General Assembly convened last week for the biennial “short” session with legislative leaders suggesting adjournment will occur prior to Independence Day weekend. Upon returning to Raleigh, legislators received the Governor’s recommendation for adjustments to the state’s two year budget. We expect the Senate will begin its work on the budget this week.

The only bill of note to receive action last week was an omnibus revenue law bill approved by the House Finance Committee. H1050 was submitted by the Revenue Laws Study committee and contains a variety of provisions, including two changes which would have a small negative impact on county revenues. Changes to the privilege license tax would result in approximately $200,000 less for Mecklenburg County annually. This provision has a far greater impact on the City of Charlotte. The bill also increases the fee that Counties must pay to License Plate Agencies that collect vehicle property taxes for the County. We anticipate that this increased fee will cost the county $500,000. While we have been working with the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners over the last several months to oppose both of these changes, it appears that both will move forward. As always, you can contact Brian Francis at 704-336-2611 or via email if you have any questions.

New LUESA Support Services Division Director
LUESA has hired a new Support Services Division Director to replace Gail Young, who retired from the County at the end of April. Maia Setzer has returned to Mecklenburg County (where she was formerly a LUESA business manager) after serving as finance director and later deputy town manager in Mooresville for 13 years. As deputy town manager, she oversaw the operations of recreation, golf, the library, and information technology.

As the Support Services Division director for LUESA, Maia will be responsible for overseeing the department’s internal finance and human resources functions, risk management, as well as the department’s information technology and website.

If you have questions, please contact LUESA Director Ebenezer Gujjarlapudi at 704-432-6201 via email.

The summer 2014 edition of the Get Going Guide includes a listing of activities for residents of all ages, including information on summer camps and events at Romare Bearden Park.

If you have questions about Park & Recreation’s summer programming, please contact Director Jim Garges at 704-336-5470 or via email.
