County Manager Going to the White House

On Jan. 19, I will be traveling to Washington, D.C., with the CEO of the Library and the School Superintendent to attend the ConnectED Library Challenge Summit. The Summit is being hosted by the White House and Institute of Museum and Library Service and 44 communities will be represented.

The ConnectED Library Challenge was launched earlier this year by President Obama, calling upon communities to collaborate to ensure that every child enrolled in school receives a library card. The Challenge recognizes the critical role that libraries play as trusted community anchors that support learning and connectivity and the notion that improving education for all children requires key local leaders to collaborate in new and powerful ways. The Summit will be both a celebration and a strategy session.

We will participate on a panel to discuss our innovative initiative, ONE Access. The Library and CMS launched the ONE Access program, which allows students to use their school ID as a library card. To date, over 100,000 CMS students have activated their ONE Access account. Mecklenburg County played a critical role in this initiative through our continued financial support of both CMS and the Library.
I am honored to represent our County at such an important event.

New LUESA Building Officially Opens

I would once again like to thank LUESA staff for their hard work and cooperation during the department’s relocation from the Hal Marshall Center to Suttle Avenue.

With the opening of this building, we have completed the first step of Bringing Mecklenburg County to You - Mecklenburg County’s Facilities Master Plan. The plan aims to provide quality County services in locations that are convenient to customers and that create better work environments for employees.

Please take a look at a few pictures from the dedication.

Paying It Forward

The Health Department’s Tuberculosis (TB) Control/Refugee Clinic has always had a desire to help those in need. After all, it’s what they do every day in their role as County employees. During the holiday season, they go BIG to help individuals who receive services from them.

It all started about six years ago when several employees were inspired to assist someone to return to his home overseas. This person found himself in a country with no family, friends or income due to poor health. The TB Control/Refugee Clinic employees were able to raise funds and collect donations to facilitate this individual’s return trip home. They made sure he had warm clothing, money in his pocket and a ride to the airport.

Since then, the spirit of charitable giving has continued and in the years following, the TB Control/Refugee Clinic employees have made it their mission to help those in need – beyond the requirements of their job. People have received everything from food, clothing and furniture to Christmas presents and special holiday dinners. So far, they have helped more than 30 people.

This year, the TB Control/Refugee Clinic Pay-It-Forward Christmas Campaign sponsored two families – a total of ten people. Once again, they were able to provide for those families with donations from outside the clinic and we are forever grateful.
