Leigh Altman, At-Large

Leigh Altman is serving her first term on the Board of County Commissioners, representing all of Mecklenburg County’s 1.2 million residents. Through her 17-year career as an attorney, Altman worked as an advocate for at-risk and vulnerable community members and carries this mission to her current role.

Before moving to Charlotte, Altman served as lead attorney for the Georgia Governor’s Office of Consumer Affairs and the Commission on Equal Opportunity. She was recognized as one of Georgia’s top lawyers under 40. Upon moving to Charlotte in 2009, Altman continued her legal advocacy as a guardian ad litem for seniors and adults with disabilities and as a staff attorney at Charlotte’s Council for Children’s Rights. Later, she served as the Juvenile Defense Attorney Representative on the Mecklenburg County Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and is currently a member of the Charlotte Habitat for Humanity’s Neighborhood Revitalization Oversight Committee.

Through the years, Altman has volunteered her time to assist domestic abuse victims, women seeking reproductive healthcare, and those facing the death penalty. She has also been committed to increasing voter turnout as a precinct chair and as board member of the Democratic Women of Mecklenburg County.

Altman and her husband David have three teenage boys and are proud CMS parents. As the great-granddaughter of Holocaust victims, Altman was raised to protect our greatest asset, this nation’s rich and vibrant diversity. She was raised in a small town on the Gulf Coast and was deeply influenced by her father’s example of listening to others with respect and finding our shared humanity regardless of our differences. These life lessons have opened new paths for collaboration and community building throughout her career and inspire her service as an At-Large Commissioner for Mecklenburg County.
