2011 Revaluation Details

The primary purpose of real property assessment is to arrive at a fair and just valuation (market value) of all real property for use in deriving property taxes that will be as equitable as is feasible given the time, staff and money availab le to the assessor. For more details, read the 2011 Schedule of Values.

In July 2013, Gov. Pat McCrory signed a bill passed by the North Carolina General Assembly which authorized Mecklenburg County to provide refunds, with interest, to home owners whose properties were overvalued as part of the 2011 property tax revaluation.

Beginning in October, at their regularly scheduled meeting each second Tuesday, the Mecklenburg County Board of Commissioners will make recommended changes on property abstracts and tax records. After the Board approves changes, Mecklenburg County and municipalities will send out revised notices of value and refund checks as appropriate.

Any increases in value will be retroactive to the revaluation date, but no penalties for these "discoveries" will be assessed.  Unpaid taxes will accrue to the current year property tax bills. All property owners will have the right to appeal results of the independent review in accordance with the Machinery Act.

Taxpayers with questions should call 311 (704-336-4600 from outside the County) or visit the main office at 700 East Stonewall Street.

*** If you are due a refund from the revaluation review process, you may receive multiple checks if you reside in one of the six municipalities in Mecklenburg County ***

If you have additional questions about the review process please see the list of Frequently Asked Review Questions or dial 311 or email the Assessor's Office
