Retiring County Clerk Surprised with Order of the Hornet Induction

12/18/2019

Janice Paige

During the Board of County Commissioners' (BOCC) regular meeting on Dec. 17, County Clerk Janice Paige was inducted into the Order of the Hornet, the County's highest honor. The award is given to citizens who have made extraordinary contributions to the community.

Janice, who is retiring this month, has diligently served as the Mecklenburg County Clerk for 33 years. The BOCC thought that this induction was more than appropriate and voted unanimously for her to be listed among the select few who have been deemed worthy of this distinct honor.

As clerk, Paige creates, maintains and archives the Board's agendas and meeting minutes, but this induction came as a special surprise during the County Manager's report at the beginning of the meeting.

Overcome with emotion and humility, Janice was accompanied by her husband and daughter as she accepted the award with kind remarks from County Manager Dena R. Diorio and commissioners.

"Working in local government has its challenges, but Janice faces them with a smile. Her personality, knowledge and work ethic have been valuable to all of us over the years," said Diorio. "She never gets rattled. You know the old saying, 'Never let them see you sweat,' and that epitomizes Janice Paige.  Everyone in the County can attest having you in our office has been a joy.  You will truly be missed."

Janice is known by her colleagues throughout the County as very detail-oriented and meticulous. She has always taken her work as a public servant seriously and sets standards for her team.

The Dec. 17 meeting was Janice's last BOCC meeting in her role as County Clerk. In October, the BOCC appointed Emily A. Kunze as the Clerk to the Board, effective Jan. 1. 2020. Kunze is the former Deputy Clerk for the City of Charlotte.

The Order of the Hornet was established in 1972. It is bestowed by the Board of County Commissioners on persons who have displayed valor or high order of service uniquely and specifically to the citizens of Mecklenburg County. This is the highest honor bestowed by the Board.
