In just one month, the private sector goal of raising $6.2 million to support MECK Pre-K has been met.
Foundation for the Carolinas President and CEO Michael Marsicano announced the accomplishment to the Board of County Commissioners Tuesday night.
“The support for this effort has been amazing,” said County Manager Dena R. Diorio. “This helps ensure Pre-K students get the best teachers possible.”
Eighteen private companies donated to the effort. They include:
The money will support college scholarships and related expenses for books, materials, transportation and stipends for childcare assistance for UNC Charlotte and Central Piedmont Community College students studying to become Pre-K teachers.
Nearly 600 children are currently enrolled in 33 classrooms since MECK Pre-K began a year ago.
The County’s FY20 Budget includes an additional $21 million in funding for early childhood education, bringing the total County investment to $36 million for next year. Early childhood education funding includes two programs: childcare subsidy ($14 million) and MECK Pre-K ($7 million).
