No Swimming Advisory Issued For Portion of Boyds Cove on Lake Wylie Following Discharge of Sewage

A NO SWIMMING advisory was issued today for a portion of Boyds Cove on Lake Wylie (click here for map).

The "No Swimming" advisory was issued after an unknown quantity of untreated sewage discharged into Boyds Cove on Lake Wylie on June 1, 2020. The discharge was caused by a failing septic system at 16415 Bunch Walnuts Road in Charlotte, N.C. The Mecklenburg County Health Department is working with the owner to ensure the necessary repairs are completed and the sewer discharge is stopped.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services staff will monitor water quality in Boyds Cove until conditions are deemed safe for human contact at which time the no swimming advisory will be lifted.

Rusty Rozzelle, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services' Water Quality Program Manager, said the advisories are standard procedure. "Since Lake Wylie is heavily used for recreation, it is important to inform residents of the sewage discharge and advise against swimming in the impacted area due to the potential risk to human health," said Rozzelle.
