MECK Pre-K is a Mecklenburg County-funded program that offers free, quality pre-kindergarten to eligible four-year-old children. We are taking applications now. To enroll in MECK Pre-K for the 2020-2021 school year, children must be age four on or before Aug. 31, 2020. Participation in MECK Pre-K is based on verified family income at or below 400% of the federal poverty level and household size (for a family of four, that’s $103,000 in annual household income). Registration kicked off with an event at Cadence Academy Preschool on Feb. 4, 2020. This preschool is one of 39 MECK Pre-K locations. Students enrolled in the program this year shared a poem about shadows and sang a song about how to get dressed. Visitors were able to tour the classrooms and see the children learning. Two parents shared stories about how their children have grown and benefited from the program from socializing with peers and doing homework with sight words. Mecklenburg County Manager Dena R. Diorio said she appreciated the commitment of the County Commissioners to early childhood education. And the Director of MECK Pre-K Trinisha Dean and Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools Pre-Kindergarten Director Melody Greenhouse explained how they work collaboratively for the children in our County.
