If you enjoy exploring the great outdoors here in Mecklenburg County by foot or bike, Park and Recreation has a greenway trail for you – actually 52 miles of them – and soon there will be many more to discover.
In early June, the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners approved Park and Recreation’s plan to accelerate greenway development across the County by adding 30 additional miles by 2023.
“Recent community surveys indicate that greenways are among the top recreational amenities residents want,” said Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Director W. Lee Jones. “They provide valuable fitness and alternative transportation opportunities for everyone. We are excited and fortunate to be able to expand our trail network for future growth in the County.”

The new projects identified in the plan were selected based on the following criteria: geographic equity, connectivity to existing recreational amenities such as parks and recreation centers, and current County land holdings.
The total investment for the multiyear strategy is $63.7 million. Here is what you can look forward to:
