2018 Property Tax Bills Going Out this Month

7/20/2018

Mecklenburg CountyMecklenburg County will mail 2018 bills for real property, individual personal property and business personal property taxes by July 30, 2018. Bills are due Sept. 1, 2018, and can be paid without interest through Jan. 7, 2019. These bills are not associated with the 2019 revaluation. Revaluation notices will be mailed in early 2019, and bills will be sent next summer.

This year, 410,923 tax bills will be mailed to taxpayers throughout the County. For certain properties whose value or tax records are under review, the respective tax bills will be subsequently mailed as they are processed.

All tax bills paid on or after Jan. 8, 2019 will be assessed interest at a rate of 2 percent for January. Additional interest in the amount of 0.75 percent will be charged for February and every month thereafter until paid. For those with mortgage escrow accounts, their real property tax bills are sent directly to the mortgage holder for payment, with the owner receiving a property tax notification from the Office of the Tax Collector.

New this year: Effective July 1, 2018, Mecklenburg County established six Law Enforcement Service Districts (LESDs) in the unincorporated area of the County and abolished the countywide LESD. The newly established LESD taxes replace the former LESD tax. Property owners in the unincorporated area will find the LESD tax included on their bill in the Bill Line Items section. The description will appear as POLICE (Jurisdiction) TAX.

The reverse side of the tax bill contains a comprehensive list of frequently asked questions. Property owners who have further questions concerning their 2018 tax bill can contact CharMeck311 by dialing 311 within Mecklenburg County or 704-336-7600 from outside the County. Additional information can be found at http://MeckNC.gov/taxes.

There are five ways to pay your tax bill:

  • By Internet: Visit http://MeckNC.gov/paytax for a credit card, debit card or eCheck payment.*
  • By phone: Dial toll-free 1-800-994-1026 for a credit card, debit card or eCheck payment.*
  • By mail: Mail a check or money order and payment stub using the return envelope that accompanied the tax bill.
  • In person: Pay at the Tax Collector’s office located in the Robert L. “Bob” Walton Plaza, 700 East Stonewall St., Charlotte NC weekdays between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Payments will no longer be accepted at the Northwest Service Center located on Wilkinson Boulevard as in previous years. Only cash, money order or check payments are accepted. Make checks payable to the Mecklenburg County Tax Collector.
  • Online Banking: Note: This payment option is not recommended for tax payments. Any interest accrued due to a rejected payment cannot be removed from the tax bill. Payments are sent from your bank. A payment may take up to four business days, after it has been authorized, before it is applied to the tax bill. The entire 24-digit tax bill number must be entered in the online bill pay account number field to ensure proper payment posting to the tax bill. The payment will be rejected and returned to the financial institution if the tax bill number is missing or incorrect. Tax bill numbers from previous payments must be deleted and replaced with a current tax bill number for each payment.

*A service fee of 2.35 percent or a minimum of $1.95 is charged for credit card or debit card payments. There is no service fee for eCheck payments.
