You may request either certified or non-certified copies.
Individuals born anywhere in the state of North Carolina from 1971 to the present may now obtain a copy of a certified birth certificate at the Mecklenburg County Vital Records Office. Cost for the service is $24.00 to research the certificate in the North Carolina state registry and includes one copy of the certificate. Additional certificates from the same search will be $15.00 each. For residents born in Mecklenburg County, the cost for a certificate remains $10.00.
NC General Statute 130A-26AIt is a felony violation to fraudulently request a certified copy of a vital record or obtain, possess, sell, furnish, use, or attempt to use for any purpose of deception a North Carolina Vital Record.
NC General Statute 130A-93Those entitled to obtain a North Carolina Vital Record are as follows: yourself, spouse, brother / sister, child / step-child, parent / step-parent, grandparent, grandchild, authorized agent, attorney or other legal representative (proof required).

Requests In Person require ID of the person requesting a certificate.
- Current state-issued driver’s license
- Current state-issued non-driver photo ID card
- Current Passport or Visa (must include photo)
- Current U.S. military ID
- Current Department of Corrections photo ID card dated within the last year
- Current state or U.S. government agency photo ID card (for persons requesting certificates as part of that agency’s business)
- Current student ID card
