As a New Year begins, we look back at the accomplishments of 2021:

- 3257 Volunteers contributed 17,166 hours from January through December: at Park projects, as Youth Sport coaches and Recreation program assistants, completing Scout projects and more! 

- Volunteer time added over $485,000 in value to YOUR Park & Recreation Department! 

- 12,760 pounds of litter were removed from Parks, Greenways and Nature Preserves! 

THANK YOU to our amazing, dedicated Volunteers...YOU MAKE OUR COMMUNITY A BETTER PLACE!

Registration has begun for Youth Baseball and Track & Field! 
    • If you are coaching Basketball now, you do NOT need to renew your application! 
    • ALL Recreation Centers will be offering spring sports! 
    • Check with your preferred Recreation Center for available coach positions. 
    • Contact information is available on the "Recreation Centers" page! 

CONTACT VolunteerServices@MeckNC.gov to check your status, or for the Volunteer application link - Please have a Recreation Center in mind where you would like to Coach (or we can help you with that!) - SIGN UP TODAY! 

A great way to spend an hour at lunchtime on Tuesdays, 11:00am-12:00, getting outdoors and helping in your community. *THANK YOU to all of the Volunteers who have come out to help all year! A Walk In The Park is "on pause" through the Holidays and the month of January. Watch for new dates in February 2022!

SPEND THE NATIONAL DAY OF SERVICE WITH PARK & RECREATION!

Pick Me Vol hands.jpgJoin Environmental Educator Matthew Morgan for a morning of Greenway cleanup: learn a little more about the wildlife that abound in our city, and how we can help protect the environment! We’ll supply litter pickers and trash bags; you bring work gloves, a face covering and plenty of ENERGY! Please wear long pants and closed-toe shoes (REQUIRED).

Volunteers must be at least 10 years old; anyone under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult/parent.

DATE/TIME: Saturday, January 15, 9:00am- 12:00

Explore a different location each month while you connect with people and nature, all while making a positive difference in our community by removing trash from our Nature Preserves and Parks! Volunteers will be equipped with litter pick-up sticks and/or gloves. Pre-registration is required. *Anyone under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by a parent/adult.

WANTED: Elaeagnus sp. AKA "Silverberry" >>> REWARD: Protection of McDowell Nature Preserve's native species and natural communities!  Meet the staff at McDowell Nature Preserve, 15222 South York Road, Charlotte, 28278 to connect with people and nature wile making a positive difference in our community by removing invasive plant species. Come prepared to cut down small shrubs with provided hand tools. Pre-registration is required. *You must be at least 12 years old to Volunteer with Weed Warriors - Anyone under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by a parent/adult. QUESTIONS? Fairy House.jpgTHE FAIRY HOUSE FESTIVAL RETURNS IN 2022!

LOCATION: LATTA NATURE PRESERVE, 5226 Sample Road, Huntersville, 28078

DATE/TIME OF EVENT: Saturday, FEBRUARY 26, 2022, 10:00am-4:00pm

NUMBER OF VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 50 per shift

Come and help with this HUGE outdoor family festival at Latta Nature Preserve! Activities will include: a fairy house building contest, fairy-themed crafts and games, geocaching, storytelling and more!

Volunteers will assist with a variety of stations, including but not limited to: crafts, games, registration, assisting with shuttles, preparing free popcorn, tending fire pits, etc. Volunteers are needed during 2 shifts: 9:00AM-1:30PM or 1:00PM-5:00PM – you may sign up for either shift or BOTH.

Please dress for the weather! Volunteers are welcome to dress up in fairy themed clothing that is family-friendly. *Volunteers must be at least 12 years old - any Volunteer under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by a parent/adult at all times! Please also note that adult Volunteers must register and pay for children to attend the Festival.

 We LOVE our Volunteers, and we want to make it EASY for you to come and help your community! Here are a couple of things you need to know:

- For some Volunteer opportunities, you need to enroll in our Volunteer Program - enrollment includes an on-line application and a background check. For Volunteer Screening Guidelines click on the link below.

- You MUST register/enroll in the Volunteer Program to be a Coach for any sport; or to assist with an ongoing program on a regular basis, IN PERSON OR VIRTUALLY (Example: tutoring once a week, teaching ESL).  To receive the application link, if needed,  please contact VolunteerServices@MeckNC.gov 

 - You do NOT need to enroll in the Volunteer Program for one-day events or projects, or to help with a program ONE time, or for less than 10 hours total (Example: chaperoning ONE field trip for an after-school program; Volunteering for a Park project).

At this time Park & Recreation is not accepting court-ordered community service placements. Watch for updates after January 1, 2022.  

PLEASE NOTE:

- Background checks will be conducted for all applicants age 16 and up when enrolling in our volunteer program.

- Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old.

- Volunteers working with Therapeutic & Inclusive Recreation Services must be at least 18 years old.
