As we welcome 2020, and a new DECADE, we look forward to yet another year of great Volunteer opportunities! You have given us the VALUABLE GIFT of your time all of this past year! Here's how the numbers for 2019 stack up:

    • More than 7300 Volunteers joined forces with Park & Recreation from January to December, 2019, to support and supplement the efforts of the hard-working staff in YOUR Parks, Recreation Centers, Senior Centers, Nature Preserves and Nature Centers, and on our Greenways.
    • Volunteers have given just over 50,000 HOURS of their time, as Youth Sport Coaches, program assistants, tutors/mentors, Park project/event volunteers, Nature Center volunteers, and much more.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR FANTASTIC VOLUNTEERS for taking so much PRIDE in YOUR Park & Recreation Department! YOU MAKE OUR COMMUNITY A BETTER PLACE!

  • SPECIAL PROJECT - Sign up TODAY!!

 > SATURDAY PROJECT: HORNETS NEST PARK - 6301 Beatties Ford Road, Charlotte, 28216 >>>>>   January 25 - 9:00am-12:00 - Volunteers 12 years old and up are welcome! All Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/adult over the age of 21.

This project will focus on installing a new surface (Fibar) on the playground! There may also be general clean-up tasks to complete, such as trimming and/or picking up limbs, raking leaves/pine needles, trash pickup, etc. All you need to bring are a pair of WORK gloves, a refillable water bottle and LOTS OF ENERGY!! Please wear long sleeves and pants, and closed-toe shoes. Projects are rain-or-shine - dress for weather! You must RSVP to Karen.Howard@MeckNC.gov - THANK YOU for helping to keep your Park safe and beautiful!

  • Therapeutic & Inclusive Recreation Services (TIRS) will appreciate help with events COMING SOON:
        • 70'S Disco DANCE at Tyvola Senior Center - January  17, 5:00pm-9:30pm

        • "Eat, Dance and Be Mine" DANCE at Tyvola Senior Center - February 21, 5:00pm-9:30pm

Fairy House.jpgSIGN UP NOW to Volunteer at the FAIRY HOUSE FESTIVAL 2020 -

Saturday, February 29 at Latta Nature Preserve - 5226 Sample Road, Huntersville, 28078 - TIME OF EVENT: 10:00am-4:00pm                

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: 2 shifts: 9:00AM-1:30PM or 1:00PM-5:00PM   *Please specify a shift when signing up: AM, PM or All Day  - WE ESPECIALLY NEED HELP WITH THE AFTERNOON SHIFT!                                      

  • Come and help with this HUGE outdoor family festival at Latta Nature Preserve! Activities will  include: a fairy house building contest, fairy-themed crafts and games, geocaching, storytelling and more! Volunteers will assist with a variety of stations, including but not limited to: crafts, games, registration, assisting with shuttles, preparing free popcorn, tending fire pits, etc. Please dress for the weather! Volunteers are welcome to dress up in fairy themed clothing that is family-friendly. *Volunteers must be at least 12 years old - any Volunteer under the age of 16 MUST be accompanied by a parent/adult at all times! Please also note that adult Volunteers must register and pay for children to attend the Festival.

 We LOVE our Volunteers, and we want to make it EASY for you to come and help your community! Here are a couple of things you need to know:

- For some Volunteer opportunities, you need to enroll in our Volunteer Program - enrollment includes an on-line application and a background check. For Volunteer Screening Guidelines click on the link below. You MUST register/enroll in the Volunteer Program to be a Coach for any sport; or to assist with an ongoing program on a regular basis (Example: tutoring once a week, teaching ESL).  To enroll in the Volunteer Program, please contact VolunteerServices@MeckNC.gov

- You do NOT need to enroll in the Volunteer Program for one-day events or projects, or to help with a program ONE time (Example: chaperoning ONE field trip for an after-school program; Volunteering for a Saturday project).

Please note: Criminal record checks are to be conducted on all applicants over the age of 16 when enrolling in our volunteer program. Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 21 years old. Volunteers working with Therapeutic & Inclusive Recreation Services must be at least 18 years old.
