​Outdoor Adventure and Nature Recreation

​Would you like to get away from the busy city life? Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Department offers a variety of outdoor recreation activities and facilities. Programs are family-friendly and available for beginners and experts. For programs offered by out professional staff register online

Hiking  

Go for a stroll surrounded by nature and reap the physical and mental benefits of it. Over 250 miles of paved and unpaved trails are waiting for you to get outside and discover the County's best hidden treasures. 


Fishing  

A number of ponds in local parks are regularly stocked and managed for public fishing.  Special creel limits apply, use the reference chart.​ You can also fish from the following Mecklenburg County parks and nature preserves that border several reservoirs on the Catawba River. State fishing regulations apply.

Latta Nature Preserve - Mountain Island Lake
Blythe Landing - Lake Norman
Jetton Park - Lake Norman
Ramsey Creek Park - Lake Norman

Fishing License Information
A North Carolina Fishing License is required for all anglers ages 16 and older. For more details​ or to purchase a license, contact the NC Wildlife Resource Commission at 1-888-248-6834.

Tackle Loaner Program 
Need a rod and reel?  We'll check one out for you- just stop by a participating Nature Center (Latta Plantation, McDowell, or Reedy Creek) to borrow a rod and reel for 24 hours. ​

Geocaching

To ensure that Nature Preserves are being enjoyed by "treasure hunters" without impacting our natural resources we have a Geocaching/Letterboxing Policy. The policy explains where, when and how to place geocaches and letterboxes in Nature Preserves.

Horseback Riding

Horses in Charlotte? Sure!  Latta Nature Preserve  offers 15 miles​ of equestrian trails​ for public use. Pull your horse trailer in and enjoy a peaceful day of trail riding. Trails subject to clo​sure when wet.  Call the trail hotline to verify conditions (980-314-1004).



Paddling

Located on the Catawba River, Charlotte-Mecklenburg has some of the best water-based recreation areas in the country.  Whether it's your first time afloat or you're training for the olympics, our facilities will help get you on the water.  

Lake Wylie

You can access Lake Wylie through McDowell Nature Preserve. Bring your own canoe, kayak, or SUP and launch from the landing located near the waterfront deck.


Mountain Island Lake

Latta Nature Preserve offers two launch options for canoes, kayaks and SUPs. The  North Canoe Access includes an accessible launch platform in a sheltered cove. The Gar Creek Canoe Access offers convenient entry into the Gar Creek inlet.
