Four Mile Creek Greenway - S. Trade St. to E. John St. (Matthews)

Map of Four Mile Creek Greenway-Matthews

You will need Adobe Acrobat to view.

 Description:

This greenway links downtown Matthews with Squirrel Lake Park and connect neighborhoods from E. John Street to S. Trade Street. This greenway is an asphalt trail with boardwalk. This is the first greenway in the Town of Matthews.

Nature Facts:

This Greenway begins at a long wooden boardwalk that passes through a mixed Loblolly and Shortleaf Pine forest. The tall, stately Shortleaf Pine is a declining species in our region, so having groups of these trees all along the greenway is a good thing. The streamside forest has typical floodplain species such as Musclewood, Tag Alder, Tulip-tree, Red Maple and Box Elder. Also seen along the greenway are other plant and tree species such as Sycamore, large Eastern Red Cedars (some nearly a Century in age), American Beech, Swamp Chestnut Oak, May-apple and an occasional Pinxter Azalea. Several areas of springtime wetlands, known as Vernal Pools, provide important breeding habitat for Marbled and Spotted Salamanders and numerous frog species.  This greenway is great for wildlife so be on the lookout for White-tailed deer, American Beaver or the many bird species that inhabit this area along the stream.
