The Eastway site is in a beautiful location within the vibrant and diverse East side of Charlotte. Before becoming parkland, the site was known as Herrin Farms and ranged in use from cattle and horse farmland to a horse racing track. To reduce property taxes, Herrin Farms sold off a chunk of the original farm in 1968 on the corner of the property, to form what is now the strip mall. In 1993, the City of Charlotte acquired the Eastway Park land, and began planning a regional park that would serve many communities in the Eastern part of the county.

Beginning in 2004, a site master plan was developed and through the hard work of many community advocates and government officials, Eastway Regional has become a reality. Eastway and the adjoining Briarwood Park has over 125 acres of parkland including 90,000 square feet of indoor recreation space, sports fields, trails, disc golf, and other outdoor amenities.
