Project: Four Mile Creek Greenway Corridor - Preliminary Alignment Study
Length: 11 miles (4 miles constructed)
Location: Johnston Road to Mecklenburg County Regional Sportsplex at Matthews
Description: The Four Mile Creek Greenway Corridor - Preliminary Alignment Study is a joint venture between the Town of Matthews and Mecklenburg County for the long-term vision of Four Mile Creek Greenway from McAlpine Creek Greenway to the Mecklenburg County Regional Sportsplex at Matthews. This Greenway Corridor will be ~ 11 miles long that will connect to McAlpine Creek Greenway, pass by 2 golf courses, go through significant residential areas, 2 sports facilities and the Town of Matthews. Four miles out of the total eleven miles of trails in this corridor are existing and opened to the public. The Study identifies a preferred alignment for the remaining undeveloped 7 miles of greenway that allows for costs and real estate needs to be considered for future funding and development.
A public meeting to introduce the Preliminary Alignment Study was held on December 12, 2018 in the Matthews Town Hall. Comments from the public meeting have been received and considered in the attached Preliminary Alignment Maps.

What's Next:
The Four Mile Creek Greenway Corridor - Preliminary Alignment Study will serve as a guide for real estate acquisition and preliminary design. Real estate acquisition is the next step in this long-term process that will require extensive collaboration with individual property owners. Property owners may donate property or be compensated for affected portions of their property. Ownership and/or easements of the land needed is an essential factor when prioritizing funding for future projects.
Neither Mecklenburg County nor the Town of Matthews have any funding allocated for the development of the Four Mile Creek Greenway Corridor in their existing Capital Improvement Plans. The construction of the 7 miles of greenway will likely not be built as 1 project, but rather 2-3 projects. For each project that gets funded for design and construction, there will be a public meeting for review and community input.
