%20 Nitrogen%20Oxide%20(NOx)
Nitrogen%20dioxide%20(NO2)%20is%20one%20of%20a%20group%20of%20highly%20reactive%20gases%20known%20as%20nitrogen%20oxides%20(NO2).%20While%20the%20Environmental%20Protection%20Agency%27s%20 National%20Ambient%20Air%20Quality%20Standards%20(NAAQS)%20covers%20the%20entire%20NOx%20group,%20NO2%20is%20the%20component%20of%20greatest%20interest%20and%20the%20indicator%20for%20the%20larger%20group%20of%20nitrogen%20oxides.%20NO2%20forms%20quickly%20from%20emissions%20from%20cars,%20trucks%20and%20buses,%20fossil%20fuel-fired%20power%20plants%20and%20off-road%20equipment.%20NO2%20is%20a%20key%20precursor%20to%20ozone%20formation.

The%20NAAQS%20for%20NO2%20is%20a%20primary%201-hour%20standard%20of%20100%20ppb. %20Mecklenburg%20County%20meets%20the%20current%20NO2%20standards.

Sulfur%20Dioxide%20(SO2)
Sulfur%20dioxide%20(SO2)%20is%20one%20of%20a%20group%20of%20highly%20reactive%20gases%20known%20as%20"oxides%20of%20sulfur."%20It%20is%20produced%20from%20the%20burning%20of%20fossil%20fuels%20(coal%20and%20oil)%20and%20the%20smelting%20of%20mineral%20ores%20(aluminum,%20copper,%20zinc,%20lead%20and%20iron)%20that%20contain%20sulfur.

The%20NAAQS%20for%20SO2%20is%20a%201-hour%20standards%20of%2075%20ppb%20and%20a%203-hour%20standard%20of%200.5%20ppm. %20Mecklenburg%20County%20meets%20the%20current%20SO2%20standards.

Carbon%20Monoxide%20(CO)
Carbon%20Monoxide%20(CO)%20is%20a%20colorless,%20odorless%20gas%20that%20is%20formed%20when%20carbon%20in%20fuel%20is%20not%20burned%20completely.%20CO%20is%20a%20component%20of%20motor%20vehicle%20exhaust.%20Higher%20levels%20of%20CO%20generally%20occur%20in%20areas%20with%20heavy%20traffic%20congestion.%20In%20Mecklenburg%20County,%20the%20majority%20of%20all%20CO%20emissions%20come%20from%20motor%20vehicle%20exhaust.

The%20NAAQS%20for%20CO%20consist%20of%20a%20primary%208-hour%20standard%20at%209%20ppm%20and%20a%201-hour%20primary%20standard%20at%2035%20ppm.%20Mecklenburg%20County%20meets%20the%20current%20CO%20standards.

Lead
Lead%20is%20a%20metal%20found%20naturally%20in%20the%20environment%20as%20well%20as%20in%20manufactured%20products.%20The%20highest%20levels%20of%20lead%20concentrations%20are%20usually%20found%20near%20lead%20smelters.%20Other%20stationary%20sources%20that%20produce%20lead%20emissions%20are%20waste%20incinerators,%20utilities%20and%20lead-acid%20battery%20manufacturers.%20With%20almost%20no%20known%20lead%20sources,%20Mecklenburg%20County%20has%20not%20routinely%20conducted%20lead%20monitoring.%20On%20December%2014,%202010,%20EPA%20revised%20the%20ambient%20monitoring%20requirements%20for%20lead%20which%20resulted%20in%20MCAQ%20implementing%20a%20lead%20monitoring%20network%20in%202011%20to%20determine%20compliance%20with%20the%20revised%20NAAQS.
