About Us

Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement is the largest code authority between Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, serving a population of more than 1 million residents spread across more than 500 square miles.

Our Mission

Our mission is to save lives and prevent injury by ensuring buildings in Mecklenburg County are safe and compliant with North Carolina Building Codes. While we are an enforcement agency, we view ourselves as partners with our customers, working alongside them to efficiently, effectively and collaboratively build a safe and thriving Mecklenburg County.

Our Work

The Code Enforcement division performs three main functions:

  • Permitting: Authorizing qualified businesses and individuals to begin work. Our staff issues more than 100,000 permits each year.
  • Plan Review: Checking of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing and fire drawings for code compliance.
  • Inspections: Our field staff check all work that required a permit, to the tune of more than 320,000 inspections per year.

Our agency is guided by an advisory board, the Building Development Commission. We have more than 200 staff at our Suttle Avenue offices and in the field serving our customers each day, working to ensure the safety of the people who live, work and visit buildings in Mecklenburg County by ensuring Code Compliance.

Data & Statistics

Our departmental processes are highly automated, our processes virtually paperless. We place an emphasis on data, both for our own planning and for the benefit of our customers. As part of the county's ongoing commitment to transparency, please access our statistical data and reports here.

Our Partners

Code Enforcement is proud to work with municipal and state authorities on all local construction projects. In most cases, customers will need to work with municipal, state, or other county agencies to clear holds and receive a permit of certificate of occupancy for their projects. Please visit our partner agencies and familiarize yourself with the role they may have in your project.
