Getting To Zero Mecklenburg

Ending the Epidemic logoGetting to Zero Mecklenburg (G2Z) is a community effort founded in 2018 to slow the spread of HIV in Mecklenburg and the surrounding counties. Since 2018, this group has grown to over 100 people representing academic institutions, HIV service providers, social workers, mental health workers, substance use providers, housing services providers, faith communities, community based organizations (CBOs), non-profits, and people living with or affected by HIV. The goals and innovative plans created by this group birthed the Ending the HIV Epidemic program, a federally-funded team within Mecklenburg County Public Health.

Our Work

Diagnose all people with HIV as early as possible
Treat people with HIV rapidly and effectively to reach sustained viral suppression
Prevent new HIV transmissions by using proven interventions, including PrEP and syringe services programs
Respond quickly to potential HIV outbreaks to get needed prevention and treatment services to people who need them
Learn more about HIV/STD Testing Options. CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care.
Learn more about Undetectable = Untransmittable (U=U). A person living with HIV who is on treatment and has an undetectable viral load cannot sexually transmit HIV.
Learn more about PrEP. PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) can reduce your chance of getting HIV from sex or injection drug use. When taken as prescribed, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV.

Public Health’s New PrEP Clinic Is Open

PrEPClinicRibbonCutting.jpg

Mecklenburg County Public Health's (MCPH) PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) clinic located inside the Northwest Public Health Department location is now open, serving clients Wednesdays from 2:30 - 5:30 p.m. by appointment only. This clinic aims to increase access to PrEP services for Mecklenburg residents who are un/underinsured and at risk for acquiring HIV.

How to Access PrEP at MCPH

  • Interested individuals should schedule an STI screening appointment and request a PrEP referral to initiate an appointment at the PrEP clinic. To schedule an STI screening call 704-336-6500.
  • MCPH will pay lab costs for uninsured/under-insured patients and will assist those patients with a medication assistance application to receive their PrEP prescription at no cost.
  • PrEP clients must return every 3 months for routine labs and screening. Prescriptions will only be issued for 3 months, so it is important to understand the commitment to return to follow up visits.
  • You can stop PrEP at any time. Just like any other medicine, it's important to communicate any side effects, changes in risk factor or other concerns with your medical provider.
