The Mecklenburg County Food and Facilities Sanitation Program is a component of the Environmental Health Division within Mecklenburg County Public Health. The mandated program is administered by the local Health Department pursuant to Chapter 130A of the General Statutes of North Carolina.

There are over 4400 food service facilities operating in Mecklenburg County and the number  increases daily. F&FS Program staff issue permits for operation of these facilities and are required to conduct over 13,000 facility inspections per year to help maintain high levels of sanitation in the protection of public health.  Employees in the program work for Mecklenburg County Public Health. They are required to be a Registered Environmental Health Specialists (REHS) by the North Carolina State Board of Sanitarian Examiners, and meet authorization requirements set by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

Mecklenburg County Environmental Health staff  review plans for new construction or the remodeling of existing facilities, investigate requests of unsanitary conditions or poor food handling practices, and provide educational information to workers to help prevent foodborne illnesses. Program employees are also responsible for enforcing state statutes, rules, and local ordinances governing a number of different types of facilities.

The F&FS Program offices are open from 8 a.m. - 5 p.m.  Mon - Fri, except on County holidays or other days as approved by the County Manager or Board of County Commissioners. Staff are on call to handle emergencies that occur after hours or on holidays. Emergency contact is initiated by calling the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.

Food Safety Recalls

Food Safety Recalls occur when there is potential for a food item to cause illness. There may be many reasons for a food safety recall, including:

  • The identification or discovery of an organism that could potentially make a person sick.
  • The discovery of an allergen which was not intended to be in the food item, for example peanuts in a food item that was not intended to have peanuts.
  • The mislabeling or misbranding of a food item.

The Food Safety & Tips tool on the left provides the latest information on current recalls. Check the "Tips" tab for information of how to remain food safe.
