Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) or Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) are diseases that are spread through anal, oral or vaginal intercourse. Hepatitis B and some STDs such as HIV can also be transmitted through a blood contact such as sharing drug injection equipment.
HIV and other STD control measures allow the Health Department to locate cases and notify contacts of those diagnosed with HIV and syphilis. Along with extensive follow-up, it can ensure that adequate testing and treatment are obtained.
