Key Initiatives

At-Home HIV Self Tests

The home test kit request form will be down for maintenance on Friday, September 3, 2021 at Noon until Monday, September 6, 2021 at 8AM.

HIV testing may look different, but it’s still available.

While in-person services may be more limited due to COVID-19, self-tests offer a safe and easy way to know your HIV status from your home, or wherever is most convenient.

Mecklenburg County Public Health is offering free HIV self-tests to anyone in Mecklenburg County who has not had an HIV test in the past 3 months.

How It Works

    1. Fill out the five-minute, confidential survey

Note: Because this is a mail-based program, we require your name and mailing address in order to successfully mail your package. Not comfortable sharing this information? Our community-based testing sites offer free, confidential testing on a walk-in basis.

    2. If you qualify, you will be mailed an at-home HIV testing kit in a discreet confidential package

The package will not be labeled or indicate its contents or that it was sent by Mecklenburg County Public Health

    3. Follow the instructions on the package, or watch this video on how to successfully take your HIV test

If you have a question at any point during the test, call 1-866-436-6527 for 24/7 support.
Language assistance services are available, free of charge. Call 704-336-6500

Things to Consider

If it has been less than 3 months since an at-risk event:

This test may not produce accurate results. Call 704-432-8378 to walk through your testing options. If it has been less than 72 hours since you were exposed, PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) may be able to help.

A self-test does not prevent HIV transmission alone.

While knowing your status is an important step to help stop HIV transmission, a complete prevention strategy should be considered to further protect yourself. This test should not be used to make decisions about behaviors that could put you at increased risk for HIV. To find out more, call 704-432-8378.
