Participatory Budgeting (PB) Mecklenburg County is a process that allows community members to identify, discuss, and prioritize public spending projects. This program will put real decision-making power into the hands of county residents who will direct which community projects are funded in the upcoming budget.
Participatory Budgeting was first developed in Brazil in 1989, and there are now over 1,500 participatory budgets around the world. The vast majority occur at the municipal level of government. PB has also been used for counties, states, housing authorities, schools and school systems, universities, coalitions, and other public agencies.
PB Mecklenburg is now recruiting volunteers and ambassadors for our Pilot Program, which begins January 2022. During this time, residents are encouraged to submit ideas. PB volunteers vet those submissions and turn them into project proposals. Residents will then vote on which projects to fund. What one idea will have the greatest impact for your community? Not sure where to start, PB Meck can help.
