American Legion Memorial Stadium Renovation Update

I want to update you on the status of renovations at Memorial Stadium.

We have received inquiries from residents and the media regarding the renovations and our work with the Charlotte Independence soccer team that is interested in bringing Major League Soccer to the stadium.

Renovations have been underway for the past two years to correct structural issues. Part of the project includes preparing a design to enlarge the facility for Major League Soccer. Expansion costs are estimated at more than $4 million.

Park and Recreation has developed a proposal and is negotiating with Charlotte Independence on a cost-sharing and management agreement that you would ultimately consider. For more information, contact Jim Garges at 980-314-1012.

GIS Day Set For Wednesday

The annual showcase of Mecklenburg County’s latest mapping technology is set for this coming week.

Mecklenburg County’s Geospatial Information Systems (GIS) has held GIS Day every year since 2003. The event showcases GIS vendors and technologies that are here and emerging, and makes the public aware of how new technology can improve the quality of life in our communities. This year, GIS Day is Nov. 19 from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Spirit Square. The event is FREE; more information and a list of activities can be found here.

DSS Participates in National Adoption Day

More than a dozen Mecklenburg County families are set to officially grow.

Mecklenburg County Department of Social Services (DSS) is one of five local agencies participating in National Adoption Day on Nov. 22 at the Mecklenburg County Courthouse.
The event begins at 9 a.m. and serves as an effort to raise awareness about the approximately 700 children in foster care in Mecklenburg County waiting to find permanent, loving families.

During the event, 14 families are expected to receive their adoption decrees and several other families who received their decrees earlier this year will also be recognized. For more information on adoption and foster care, click here or call 704-336-5437.
