BOCCYour Legislative Report

The state House formally rejected the Senate's 2016-17 budget proposal last week, which is a formality that will officially start budget negotiations between the two chambers of the NC General Assembly. A conference committee comprised of members of both chambers will be appointed to work out differences between the two chambers to form a compromise state budget.

Lawmakers have stated publicly on numerous occasions that they want to get a final plan to Gov. Pat McCrory's desk before July 1, the start of the state’s next fiscal year.

If you have any questions, please contact Deputy County Manager Chris Peek at 980-314-2881 or Chris.Peek@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

MYEP Internship Program Begins June 20

More than 70 high school students will gain valuable work experience this summer as they intern with the County and the City of Charlotte through the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program (MYEP).

Interns will work in various departments including DSS, Park and Recreation, Public Information and Human Resources for 20 hours a week from June 20 through Aug. 12. The paid internships give students a chance to earn money over the summer and see what it’s like to work in local government. We have had student and supervisor orientations to ensure a rewarding experience for all.

The MYEP internship program is a collaborative project with the City of Charlotte and the County. The Manager’s Office, Human Resources and Public Information work together to oversee the program.

If you have any questions, please contact LaShonda Hart at 980-314-2906 or LaShonda.Hart@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.

Health Department Offers Free HIV Testing for National HIV Testing Day

In preparation for National HIV Testing Day on June 27, Mecklenburg County Health Department and Carolinas CARE Partnership are teaming up with Walgreens and Greater Than AIDS to encourage community members to know their HIV status. To help with the effort, the Walgreens at 1500 E. Third St. Suite A, Charlotte will be offering free HIV testing over a three-day period from June 23-25.

While the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises that all Americans be screened for HIV as a routine part of medical care, many Americans have never been tested or are not being tested as often as recommended, according to national surveys by the Kaiser Family Foundation. Of the more than 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S., an estimated one in seven do not know that they are infected and only three in 10 are receiving ongoing care and treatment

More information about HIV/AIDS including testing sites in Mecklenburg County is available here.
