NACo Wrap Up
I would like to thank the more than 160 volunteers who helped make the National Association of Counties (NACo) annual conference a tremendous success.
The conference, which drew thousands, provided county officials with a great opportunity to vote on NACo’s policies related to federal legislation and regulation, learn about innovative county programs, find out about issues affecting counties across the country and view products and services from participating companies and exhibitors.
Mecklenburg County Participates in the Race to the Beach Challenge
Mecklenburg County will once again participate as a partner in the Race to the Beach Clean Commute Challenge July 13 through August 23.
The challenge, which is open to open to City and County employees and the public, encourages commuters in the Charlotte metro region to seek alternatives to driving alone to work. Their efforts help reduce air pollution and earn them a chance to win great prizes, such as a weekend getaway to the beach.
The biggest air quality problem in the Charlotte region is ground-level ozone (the main ingredient in "smog"). It mainly comes from tailpipe emissions of cars and trucks. In large quantities, this pollutant can make our air “unhealthy” to breathe.
Even with cleaner cars and other new technology, our air could get worse as our population grows, endangering our health and reducing our quality of life. The good news is that all of us have the power to improve air quality through our actions.
