BOCCUpdate: Red Measles and Influenza

Just to keep you updated with the latest news in the Mecklenburg County Health Department, we still have just one confirmed case of Rubeola, also known as “red measles.” The Health Department is making daily calls to a small number of people who may have been exposed. The day-to-day monitoring will continue until the incubation period ends, which is 21 days after possible exposure.

As we enter the peak of the flu season, the Health Department is doing what it can to track the spread of the virus. Influenza is not a reportable illness, so the County is only notified after a confirmed death. So far, two people in Mecklenburg County have died from the flu this flu season. The Health Department indicates that is about average for this time of year.

County Wins Distinguished Budget Presentation Award

The County’s Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has marked another accomplishment.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has again presented Mecklenburg County with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for FY2014-2015.

In order to receive this award, a governmental entity is required to publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, as an operations guide, as a financial plan, and as a communications medium.

It is a significant accomplishment and the County has received this honor annually dating back to 1987.

Panthers Tailgate Recycling Partners Wrap up Another Successful Year

The numbers are up for our Panther Tailgate Recycling Partners.

Volunteers collected 45 tons of recyclables on game days throughout the football season. In addition to the Panther games, collections were made at the ACC football Championship and the Belk Bowl.

The Panthers Tailgate Recycling Partners include Bojangles, the City of Charlotte Solid Waste, Hands On Charlotte and the Carolina Panthers. The partnership hopes to increase awareness and participation by increasing communication and education efforts.
