Annual Legislative Breakfast Set for Thursday

This Thursday, Jan. 5, Mecklenburg County will host its annual Legislative Breakfast at the Land Use and Environmental Services Agency building located at 2145 Suttle Ave.

The breakfast, which begins at 8 a.m., will provide the Board of County Commissioners, staff leadership, and the North Carolina General Assembly with an opportunity to discuss the County’s 2017 legislative agenda, as well as the legislative requests of the courts.

Our legislative priorities are as follows:

• Investing in early childhood education so as to eliminate the waitlist for four-year-olds.
• Fixing counties’ Medicaid reimbursement problem as it relates to local confinement facilities.
• Establishing a state-run domestic violence database that members of the public can access.
• Protecting water resources at the local level.
• Eliminating the 25,000-barrel cap on small business craft breweries so that they can expand on their own and create more jobs.
• Maximizing veterans’ online accessibility for their pensions and benefits.
The North Carolina House and Senate will both convene for the 2017 session on Wednesday, Jan. 11.

Another Big Year for Park and Rec Capital Projects

2017 will be another big year for Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation capital projects. The department is working hard to complete and break ground on several anticipated facilities, including greenway sections, nature preserves, a recreation center renovation, park shelters and more.

You can view a complete list of projects here.

Panthers Tailgate Recycling Partners Wrap Up Successful Year

The Panthers Tailgate Recycling Partners have wrapped up another successful year.

Volunteers collected 27.7 tons of recyclables on game days throughout the football season. In addition to the Panther games, collections were made at the annual Belk Bowl on Dec. 29.

The Panthers Tailgate Recycling Partners include Bojangles’, City of Charlotte Solid Waste, Keep Mecklenburg Beautiful and the Carolina Panthers. The partnership hopes to increase awareness and participation by increasing communication and education efforts.
