30,000 and Counting: Mecklenburg’s Twitter Channel Continues to Grow

Mecklenburg County’s official Twitter handle, @MeckCounty, continues to reach new heights. In late December, the channel gained its 30,000 follower, making it the County’s most active social media page.

Since its creation in 2009, @MeckCounty has become a popular way for residents to instantly get the latest County news, receive updates during Board of County Commissioners meetings, find out about County closings due to inclement weather and ask questions.

In addition to Twitter, the County’s Facebook page rose in popularity from 2,000 likes in January 2015 to over 3,550 in late December.

Residents can also connect with the County on Flickr, Instagram, Linkedin, Nextdoor, Periscope and YouTube.

Thanks for following. Let's get the conversations started!

County Budget Office Wins Distinguished Award

The Mecklenburg County Budget Office has earned another honor to add to its collection of many awards.
The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada has once again presented Mecklenburg County with the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for Fiscal Year 2015-2016.

In order to receive this award, a governmental entity is required to publish a budget document that meets program criteria as a policy document, as an operations guide, as a financial plan, and as a communications medium.

The County has received this honor each year since 1987.

Congratulations to staff for a job well done.

Bringing Culture to the Blocks

Whether you enjoy music, poetry, dance or photography, Mecklenburg County and the Arts & Science Council (ASC) are making it easier than ever to get out and enjoy cultural arts activities close to home.

In 2016, the two agencies will offer an array of family-friendly programs at libraries and recreation centers as part of ASC’s Culture Blocks initiative – an effort that aims to bring cultural programs to underserved neighborhoods throughout the County.

To develop the programs, ASC staff is holding informal conversations with residents to learn about how they experience arts and culture, the cultural activities they would be interested in participating and the cultural expressions relevant to their communities.

Residents within those blocks are also experiencing pop-up cultural activities, including performances by Jazz Arts Initiative and dance workshops by Charlotte Ballet and scheduled residencies with cultural organizations. ASC is planning to host free community dinners with cultural experiences and facilitated conversation around arts and culture in each block.

After seeing what themes arise in each of the five blocks, ASC will then work with the communities, cultural organizations and artists to provide those areas with the cultural programming residents say they want. Click here to view a list of programs that have been identified so far.

Mecklenburg County provided $300,000 in funding to support the initiative.
