BOCCLegislative Update

The North Carolina General Assembly started its 2017 long session Wednesday, Jan. 25, with members filing bills to debate this week and in the weeks to come.

Considerable discussion is already underway about another attempt to repeal HB2, though no timeline has been established.

Many members also believe they will revisit the idea of sales tax redistribution among counties. The North Carolina Association of County Commissioners is opposed to any further distribution of sales tax away from economic driver counties like Mecklenburg and Wake and will lobby accordingly.

This year, the state budget process starts in the Senate, which will receive a recommended budget from Governor Cooper, and then release its own proposed budget. The House will develop a proposed FY18 budget as well.

County Participates in McArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice Challenge
Roundtable Discussion

The Mecklenburg County Department of Criminal Justice Services, along with the National Center for Victims of Crime and the John D. and Catherine T. McArthur Foundation, will hold a roundtable discussion tomorrow from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in CH-14 of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center.

The Board is invited to attend the discussion, which serves to inform victims, survivors and local crime victim advocates of Mecklenburg County’s participation in the McArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice Challenge, and more broadly, looks at the victim’s role in front-end criminal justice reform.

Using the findings from other national and local level roundtables, we will draft a core set of principles for victim engagement in the front-end criminal justice reform movement. These principles will be presented during a plenary session at the National Center for Victims of Crime National Training Institute in Portland, Oregon.

The 5-week series is designed for residents to learn about our local government: City, County, County courts and the CMS Board of Education. During these sessions, speakers with current and former experience describe the function and share their experiences.

The first class, which starts at 6:15 p.m. at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, will include a presentation from Mecklenburg County’s budget director, Mike Bryant, on the County budget.
