State of the County Address Moved to Feb. 16
Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners Chairman Trevor M. Fuller will present the 2016 State of the County Address on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m., in the chamber of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center. During the speech, he will outline priorities and goals for the County's future.
All elected officials and other dignitaries in Mecklenburg County are invited, along with the public and the media. For those who can't attend, the speech will be broadcast live on the Government Channel, Time Warner Cable 16, and streamed online at www.MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.
County Names New Assistant Health Director
I am pleased to announce that Dr. Cardra E. Burns will be joining the Mecklenburg County Health Department on March 7 as assistant health director. Dr. Burns is currently the heath director in Halifax County, and is well known in the NC Association of Local Health Directors for her innovative work. Prior to becoming health director in Halifax, Dr. Burns served as the nutrition director in Scotland County. While her recent experience is in rural health departments, Dr. Burns spent the first five years of her public health career in metropolitan Dekalb County, Georgia. Dr. Burns holds a bachelor of science degree in nutrition/food science from Georgia Southern University, a master of business administration degree from Webster University, and a master of public administration degree and a doctorate in business administration with a specialization in information systems management from Walden University. Dr. Burns is also involved in various community initiatives which including community sustainability and engagement projects, teen pregnancy prevention, drug abuse prevention, breastfeeding awareness and support activities, and promoting healthier lifestyles for North Carolina residents. When Dr. Burns has spare time, she enjoys cooking, spending time with family/friends, and caring for her spirited Chihuahua, "Brutis."

Save the Date: Charlotte Career Discovery Day Coming in April
You are invited to join approximately 4,000 students at this year's County-wide Charlotte Career Discovery Day on April 13, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the at The Park Expo and Conference Center's Liberty Hall, 800 Briar Creek Road.
This event will allow 10th through 12th grade students from across Mecklenburg County to interact with leading employers in the cutting-edge fields of business, health sciences, human services, local government and technology.
Charlotte Career Discovery Day provides youth with the opportunity to find direction as they work to build career security for their future.
Approximately 14 County departments will host tables at the event.
