BOCCCoal Ash Removal by Duke Energy

On April 1, 2013, Duke Energy discontinued the operation of its Riverbend Steam Station located on Mountain Island Lake in Gaston County with plans to permanently close the coal ash basins. North Carolina’s recently adopted Coal Ash Management Act requires the excavation and closure of the basins at Riverbend to be completed by August 2019. In order to excavate the ash and close the basins, water on top of the ash must be removed. On Jan. 19, 2016, Duke Energy began this operation by pumping water from Riverbend’s coal ash basins to Mountain Island Lake.

With the initiation of coal ash removal efforts, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services has increased its monitoring activities in Mountain Island Lake around the coal ash basins due to the increased potential for the accidental discharge of coal ash containing inorganics such as arsenic, mercury and lead that could result in negative water quality impacts and threats to drinking water supplies.

To date, monitoring data indicates no negative water quality impacts from the coal ash removal operation at the Riverbend Steam Station. Charlotte Mecklenburg Storm Water Services has been working closely with Charlotte Water and Duke Energy in its ongoing monitoring effort, which will continue through the duration of the coal ash excavation process. In the event that negative water quality impacts are detected, action will be taken to ensure the protection of downstream drinking water supplies.

Village HeartBEAT Receives National Award

I would like to congratulate Village HeartBEAT (Building Education Accountabilities Together), which includes Cheryl Emanuel of the Mecklenburg County Health Department, on receiving the Community Outreach Champion award for outstanding support of the Million Hearts Initiative.

This award was presented by Sharon Ricks, acting regional health administrator, region IV, Department of Health and Human Services-Office of the Assistant Secretary. This is a critical component to getting faith-based organizations empowered and engaged to commit to increasing heart health awareness of their congregations.

Currently our focus with Village HeartBEAT has been aligned with key priority populations which include African-Americans and Hispanic congregations that are located in the high-priority population zones.

For more information on Village HeartBEAT, contact Cheryl Emanuel at 980-314-9027 or Cheryl.Emanuel@MecklenburgCountyNC.gov.
