BOCCSecurity Update

The tragic events last week in San Bernardino have brought to the forefront the need to ensure that every County employee knows what to do in the event of an active shooter situation.

While we cannot let fear and distrust take hold of how we live our everyday lives, there are some things we can do to prepare. I am taking proactive steps to help employees remain as safe as possible in any situation.

I have directed Mecklenburg County Security Coordinator Chad Harris to develop and implement active shooter training for all County employees as soon as possible. Harris and his team will provide face-to-face instruction at multiple County locations regarding how to manage such an incident, and give everyone the best chance to avoid injury or worse. I want this effort to directly reach all of the County's 5,300 employees.

Our employees are our most valuable resource, and creating a safe workplace is a top priority. I want to ensure that employees have all of the tools needed to keep them and the thousands of customers we serve each week safe.

Charitable Giving Campaign Wrap-Up

Thank you to everyone who participated in this year’s Charitable Giving campaign. I am proud to share that employee participation grew by 76 percent compared to last year’s campaign.

Donations through payroll deduction and one-time contributions exceeded $105,000. Employees also cashed out 1,008 hours of vacation to donate to their favorite charities.

This year, employees supported 66 organizations in Mecklenburg County that share our vision of making this the best place to live, work and recreate.

First Ward Park Opens Tomorrow

After nearly a decade of planning and a year of construction, First Ward Park, 301 E. Seventh St., is set to open tomorrow at 10:30 a.m.

The dedication ceremony, hosted by Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation, will include light refreshments, musical presentations by area schools and brief remarks from local dignitaries.

After the dedication, join Park and Rec and UNC Charlotte from noon until 6:30 p.m. for music, hot chocolate and park tours. Samplings from the merchants at the 7th Street Public Market and Brixx Wood Fired Pizza will be provided from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. The park’s holiday lights will be turned on around 5:15 p.m.

Domestic Violence Memorial Tree Honors Victims

You are invited to participate in the 11th Annual Domestic Violence Memorial Tree lighting ceremony tomorrow at CMPD Headquarters Main Lobby, 601 East Trade St. The event will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The tree will be on display through Jan. 2, 2016 to commemorate the 45 lives lost to domestic violence this year in North Carolina.

Mecklenburg County Community Support Services is partnering with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Domestic Violence Speakers Bureau and the Domestic Violence Advocacy Council in this domestic violence public awareness effort.
