April is Child Abuse Awareness Month

Mecklenburg County, along with several community partners, joined together on April 2 for a ceremony and news conference to observe the beginning of Child Abuse Awareness Month.

The news conference launched the month’s awareness efforts, which include a social media campaign and lessons for children in both local YMCA programs and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools.

Locally, a group of child-serving agencies have formed the Mecklenburg Child Abuse Prevention Team to help build awareness of the issue of child abuse and to educate children and adults on ways child abuse and neglect can be prevented.

After the ceremony, participants planted pinwheels outside the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center along 4th Street. The pinwheel has been adopted nationally as a symbol of child abuse/neglect prevention. It symbolizes the stable, healthy and protected childhood all children deserve.

You can watch a video of the event here.

The Child Abuse Prevention site has more information on local resources and plans for the month.

Mecklenburg Among Healthiest Counties in the State

The 2015 County Health Rankings, released last week by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin Population Health Institute, ranks Mecklenburg County 5th in health outcomes and 14th for health factors. Overall, the County ranked 5th out of 100 counties, up from sixth last year.

This overall snapshot of County health shows that where you live influences how well and how long you live. Local-level data allows the County to see how it compares on with others in the state on 30 factors beyond medical care that influence health including education, housing, violent crime, jobs, diet and exercise.

Nationally, this year’s rankings show that the healthiest counties in each state have higher college attendance, fewer preventable hospital stays, and better access to parks and gyms. This report also looks at distribution in income and the links between income levels and health.

‘Get Involved and Get Green’ for the Great American Cleanup

Each spring, Mecklenburg County participates in the Great American Cleanup (GAC), a national movement that stresses environmental awareness through community-organized beautification projects.

Locally, thousands of volunteers will work to clean parks, greenways, creeks and other areas throughout the County over the next two months.

If you are interested in participating in a GAC event, please register at www.wipeoutwaste.com
